It’s always great to see children enjoying their hobbies and developing their talents. Everyone enjoys seeing a young prodigy emerge in any activity. Remember the excitement England felt at the emergence of Wayne Rooney? Remember how our hearts melted at Tom Daley competing in the Olympics (he was the diver, for those of you who don’t remember)? We all want these prospects to succeed! But I’m getting tired of it happening at my expense!

I am a keen chess player and I can tell everyone out there that it is a horrible feeling to get beaten by a junior player at the game! I think all adults hate playing kids because you just never know how good they are until you have played and undoubtedly lost to them. Of course, I enjoyed beating adults when I was a junior player but I feel guilty about it now! I have lost to three kids under 14 years old this season and I don’t know how much more my ego can handle! I should point out that I am in my early 20’s, so although I am an adult I am not long out of my junior years. I think this makes it worse though, seeing so many good young players and thinking “Why didn’t I make the effort to be as good as these guys and girls when I had the chance!?”. I realise this is all very pathetic but I needed to vent my frustration and this site seemed perfect for it!

Maybe I just need to find a new hobby? One I have a better chance of winning, like bingo for example…
